Hackers - How To Protect Yourself

Last Updated: 6 November 2006

So, are hackers really out there? Absolutely. Without you even realising it, your computer has probably been scanned by a hacker while you were on the internet today. It's that common. However, most hacker scans are usually of little or no threat.

If you were to invest in a hacker monitoring program of some sort, you would find that while you are connected to the internet, your computer is occasionally scanned by hackers looking for a computer with weaknesses or holes in its security that they can get into. Hackers often do this by using "port scanners" which are tools that search the web for computers that are online and aren't secure. If they find a computer they can access, they may be able to break in if your computer is running a particular program or is infected with a particular virus.

It is rare for people to be damaged by hackers, but the risk is still out there. Anyone who is connected to the internet is at risk. Hackers often do not discriminate between big business and individuals, so just because you're small doesn't mean you aren't at risk.

Fortunately, there are programs available that can protect your system from hackers and the cost isn't too bad if you're really serious about protecting yourself. Some of these programs work by closing down any unused ports in your system, thereby closing off the entry point for the hacker.
