Rescue Disks

Last Updated: 7 November 2006

Another very important step in protecting your data is to create "rescue disks". A rescue disk can be an external drive, a floppy disk (less common now), or perhaps a CD, that you can use to start your system and repair faults on your hard drive or normal operating system.

Rescue disks are particularly useful if there are problems with your BIOS set up, systems files, or other parts of your operating system that can stop you from even accessing your hard drive. Rescue disks allow you to start your PC, look at what is wrong, fix it, or even revert your PC back to the way it was "pre-crash".

As a minimum, you should create a Windows startup disk. On its own this will usually help you access your hard drive in order to make changes or repairs. However, the best way is through rescue disk software that usually comes with an external drive or rewriteable CD-ROM. These rescue disks will not only allow you to start your PC, but will also run a program that helps you find out what is wrong - and then fixes it!

We have used rescue disks before in real emergencies and they work great. The best thing is that they prompt you through the recovery, so even if you know little or nothing about the details of your operating system, you will still be able to work your way through the problem and fix it.

Having a current rescue disk ensures you will be able to recover fully from most system failures.
