NEW GOOGLE RESOURCE FOR WEBMASTERS

Google have put together a range of tools for webmasters to help them understand how their website is faring within the world's largest search engine.

Google Webmaster Central (www.google.com/webmasters/) provides a range of tools to help you submit your site properly to Google, check how many pages of your site have been included in their database, as well as lots of statistics on what search terms people are using to find your site, what other sites link to your site, and more.

Another feature is the Google Sitemap tool, which allows you to upload a list to Google of all the pages on your site, effectively informing them what pages to include.

Check it out at www.google.com/webmasters/

THIS MONTH'S QUESTION

This month's question comes Maureen:

"When I do a search for our services in Google, our website is nowhere to be found. How can we get it to appear on the first page of results?"

Most major search engines now provide a combination of free and paid results when you do a search.

Ranking high in the free search results is very difficult, because there are so many websites competing, and generally speaking the search engines put the most popular websites higher up the top, making it difficult for smaller businesses to get there. Trying to reach the top of the free results is a long term process, and never guaranteed.

The paid option gives small businesses a chance to be on the first page instantly. Most search engines will charge you "per click", meaning that it's free to be listed, and then you pay each time someone clicks on your listing (eg. $0.20 per click). You have total control over how much to spend, when and where the ads appear, and more. Not only do these paid ads provide smaller businesses the opportunity to compete with the larger ones, but it is extremely effective advertising. If you are only bidding, for example, $0.20 per click, then for $100 you get 500 visitors who are looking for your service. You can't get that kind of response from most other advertising methods.

You can find out more about paid search engine ads at www.southwestecommerce.com/ppc.htm
