SOME FACTS ON GETTING LISTED WITH GOOGLE
There's a lot of misinformation going
around about getting your web site listed in
Google, the world's most popular search engine.
We've listed some facts below that should clarify
things for you.
And if you're still not sure why you should
have your web site listed with Google, just
remember, not only is it free, but they receive
over 200 million searches every single day.
Firstly, let's clear up the issue of getting
your site listed in the first place. Contrary to
popular belief, you usually do NOT have to submit
your site to Google in order for it to be listed.
You can submit your web site to them manually if
you like (at www.google.com/addurl.html) ,
but there is usually no need as the
"GoogleBot" (spider, or computer
program that searches the Internet for web sites
to add to it's database) will find your site by
following a link to it, provided you have one of
course. It will then search through your site and
add the pages to it's database.
Arranging for other sites to link to your web
site is very important. Once you've got one or
two quality links, it will usually only be a
matter of weeks before Google finds your site and
lists it.
Submitting your site direct to Google will not
normally get you listed any faster. And neither
will resubmitting over and over again.
Now, on to some fast facts:
- Never, ever, have hidden text on your web
site (eg. white text on a white
background, and so on). This will
eventually get your site banned by
Google, as they interpret it as an
attempt to influence their search results
- Google does not penalise sites for having
"pop-up" windows, although if
your site has them, you cannot
participate in their "Adwords"
program (a paid listing option)
- New web sites do take time to climb up
the Google search engine rankings. This
is mainly because a major factor in how
Google ranks sites, is how many reputable
sites link to your site. If your site is
new, it's going to take time to build
those incoming links.
- Paid advertising through Google (Adwords)
does NOT affect the ranking of your
normal free listings with them
- Joining any kind of artificial linking
program, in an effort to boost your link
popularity, can put you at risk of being
penalised by Google
- Google is able to index most types of web
pages, including pdf, asp, jsp, shtml,
xml, and so on - not just html.
After all that is said and done, provided you
have a quality web site, don't use any dodgy
tactics, and build as many quality links to your
site as possible, you'll find that your site will
get picked up by Google without you having to do
much more.

DO YOU KNOW A GOOD BANK?
Time for US to ask YOU a question.
With the banks in Australia seemingly altering
(and raising) their fees so often, it's hard to
keep track of who's providing the best deal.
We've been on the lookout now for a bank that
has low fees when cashing international cheques.
Our current bank (we won't say who they are, but
they are one of the "big four", charge
a hefty fee just to deposit an international
cheque into a bank account, which can sometimes
mean it's simply not worth cashing.
So, if you know of a bank that charges low or
zero fees for cashing international cheques, we
want to hear from you.
And we'll let you all know the outcome too.
