Here's this fortnight's question, from Rory.
"What are the rules for purchasing a
.com.au domain name? Do you need to have an
ABN?"
"You must be a registered business in
order to purchase a .com.au domain name (unlike
.com names, which can be purchased by anyone).
This means that you need to have a registered
business name.
Also, the .com.au name must be related to your
business somehow. Many years ago the rules were
very strict and you could only purchase names
that were exactly the same as your business name.
This has now been relaxed and you can purchase
.com.au names that are different from your
business name, but they must still be related to
your business or a service you provide. For
example, if your business name is "Bob's
Panel Beating", but you also provide
auto-electrical services, you can not only get www.bobspanelbeating.com.au,
or www.bobspb.com.au, but you may also be
eligible for other related names such as www.auto-electrics.com.au.
It's up to the registrar, but the guidelines have
been significantly relaxed.
These rules don't apply to the global domains
(eg. .com, .net, etc). You can buy any of those
without showing any relationship to the name.
It's just first come first served.
