INTERNET SEARCH CONTINUES TO GROW

According to a recent survey by www.comscore.com, Americans conducted 6.4 billion searches in June 2006, a 6-percent decline from May 2006 (6.8 billion searches), but a 29-percent increase over June 2005 (5.0 billion searches).  The decline in search volume from May is considered to be mainly a seasonal effect.

During that month, Google and it's related sites accounted for most of the searches (2.9 billion searches conducted), followed by Yahoo! sites (1.8 billion) and MSN-Microsoft sites (818 million).

This is the eleventh consecutive month that Google has increased it's market share, confirming that it is the most important search engine to advertise in worldwide. And overall search numbers continue to increase every month.

With an estimated 1 billion searches conducted every day around the world, search engines continue to be the number 1 way that people find a website related to their interest.

Where is your site appearing in the search results? Don't believe those people who say that it's impossible to get on the first page of results. All major search engines, including those in Australia, have provided a way to be on the first page of results for your keywords immediately, through Pay Per Click advertising, which is extremely cost effective compared to other forms of advertising.

THIS MONTH'S QUESTION

This month's question comes Brad:

"How quickly can you build a website? "

This depends on what the website needs to do, but with our current workload we normally allow up to 2 weeks to complete a new website. This can vary for a number of reasons, and sometimes we can complete it much sooner.

If you already have a website and need a minor update, we can normally do that within 24 hours, depending on the update required.

Got a question? Send it to us at admin@southwestecommerce.com and we'll do our best to answer it, as well as publish one every month for everyone to see.

THE BOTTOM LINE FOR A WEBSITE

We often hear of people who are confused about the actual cost of a website. When you've received a quote, what does it cover? To help you through the process, here are 4 cost areas that you need to consider when getting a website:

  1. Domain Name - this is your website address domain name, whether it's .com.au, .com, .net, or whatever. There are different rules for getting each one, and different prices, and the price you are quoted is for a particular period only (that is, you need to renew on a regular basis). Roughly you should be looking at around $20 per year for a .com domain, or around $60 per 2 years for a .com.au domain.

  2. The website itself - this is the one that will vary a lot, depending on what you want the site to do, how big it will be, and the designer involved. The important thing here is to get a few quotes, and make sure that you are comparing apples with apples. We can give you a free quote as one of your comparisons, by you filling out the short form at www.southwestecommerce.com/webdev.htm.

  3. Hosting - you need to have your website hosted on the Internet. An average price is around $20 per month, but again you need to check what you get for that.

  4. Updating - a lot of people forget about this one, but you need to consider it. Can you update the site yourself? Do you even want to? How much will it cost for updates?
