BALLOT FOR .AU GEOGRAPHIC DOMAIN NAMES

The .au Domain authority (AUDA) has announced that thousands of geographic Domain Names (such as margaretriver.com.au, bunbury.com.au, and busselton.com.au) are now available to be registered by Australian individuals and businesses.

Until now, such domain names have been off limits to everyone. But now the .au Domain authority have stated that a ballot system will take place to allocate these names to individuals or businesses who are eligible for them.

How do you become eligible for them? The same rules apply for these names as any other .com.au domain name. That is, you have to have a business that is related to those names in some way. The easiest way to establish that is through a registered business name. For more information on general elegibility requirements for .com.au domain names, visit our site at http://www.southwestecommerce.com/register-domains.html.

Applications for these domain names close on 31 July 2005.

After that date, a ballot will be held for each domain name to allocate them.

If you want to apply for one of these names, full details and instructions are at our domains site at http://domains.southwestecommerce.net/sw/newdnr/register/geographic_names.jsp.

If you are the successful registrant, each of these domain names will cost you $999, which includes a one-off AUDA release fee of $825. After that, the domain can be renewed at our normal low rate of $88 every two years.

THIS FORTNIGHT'S QUESTION

This fortnight's question comes James:

"Why does my website look different in different browsers?"

Different browsers (eg. Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox) all interpret and display webpages a little differently, and there isn't a lot you can do about it. Fortunately, in most cases the differences aren't too big, but it is worthwhile viewing your website through a few different browsers to make sure that it still remains legible and reasonably professional in each one.

There are tools around that can help you to minimise those differences, but one of the best things to do is simply view your site in different browsers and make changes as required until you have a site that looks good in all of them.

Got a question? Send it to us at admin@southwestecommerce.com and we'll do our best to answer it, as well as publish one every fortnight for everyone to see.

IS THE FLOPPY DISK DEAD?

We recently had to purchase a new computer, and when we asked to have a floppy disk drive installed, we were advised that the particular brand we were buying no longer supplied floppy disk drives.

Not only was it not standard, it was not even an option anymore. "Obsolete technology", the salesperson told us.

So although we had suspected it for some time, there was the proof. Floppy disk drives are on the way out and you may soon come across computers that do not have them at all.

The replacement? USB memory sticks, otherwise known as flash drives. These plug directly into a USB port on your computer and typically hold hundreds of times more information than a floppy disk.

HOW TO FIND A DOMAIN NAME OWNER

If for some reason you ever want to know who actually owns a website (or rather, it's domain name), there is a simple tool that will tell you.

It's called doing a "Whois" query, and you can do it by going to our domains site at http://domains.southwestecommerce.net and clicking on WhoIS.

Then simply enter the domain name (without the "www"), and it will show you who is on record as owning the domain.
