WHY YOUR SITE IS NOT IN THE SEARCH ENGINES - PART 2

If you missed Part 1 of our article on why you may not be included in the search engines, read about it here. Now for Part 2.

  1. Does Your Site Use Frames?

First of all, let us state that despite what some people may tell you, web sites that use frames are absolutely fine for search engines. You just need to make some adjustments to ensure that the search engines are able to read and deliver them properly.

The first problem is that some search engines can't read the frame content pages unless you have links to them from within the no-frames section of your coding. Secondly, it is VITAL that you put coding in all your pages that ensures that when someone arrives at a particular page from a search engine "out of context", that the page appears in it's proper place within the frames layout.

If you don't know what this means, or how to do it, you should consider seeking professional help to fix the problem, otherwise your site may not be included in the search engines or, even if it is, people will most likely be viewing your pages out of their proper context.

  2. Does Your Site Use Passwords?

Remember that search engines can't fill in passwords or forms, so if there is a section of your web site that can only be accessed by typing in something, then the search engine won't be able to find it.

  3. Free Web Sites

Some search engines (not all), have a tendency to ignore or penalise sites that are hosted on free servers. This is unfair, but has come about because that's where 99% of the spam, porn and offensive web sites come from. Having your web site hosted at www.free-hosting-service.com/~mywebsite/, for example, will suggest to some search engines that your site is suspect and they may not list it. If you can afford it, your own domain name is the best policy.

  4. Sharing An IP Address With Suspect Sites

Many web hosters will store multiple web sites on a single IP address on the Internet. Unfortunately, this can mean that if one of the other sites on the same IP address does something dodgy (eg. send out spam), then you can find that the IP address gets banned or penalised, and then everyone who shares that IP address (eg. you) cops the penalty too.

Unfortunately, getting your web site hosted on it's own unique IP address is usually a more expensive option. If you think that your site is being banned for this reason, talk to your ISP about your options.

OVERTURE OPENING IN AUSTRALIA ON 19 JANUARY 2004!

You heard it first in SWeCS News. Arguably the largest pay-per-click search engine in the world, Overture (www.overture.com), is opening up it's long awaited Australian version on 19 January 2004.

For those of you who haven't seen or used Overture before, it's overseas search engines allow you to target specific customers and only pay when they actually visit your web site. It has a very wide distribution network which includes MSN, AltaVista, Yahoo, Infospace and CNN.

This strong distribution network will also continue in Australia, with Overture Australia results also showing in Yahoo, AltaVista, Hewlett Packard, and Ozemail. Through this network, businesses will now be able to target over 4.5 million active Australian Internet users.

For Australian businesses, the best news about this new search engine is the ability to target Australian Internet users specifically, rather than having to advertise on international search engines.

Watch this space for more information on how to sign up and use Australian Overture.
