What's The Deal With Twitter?
Confused about Twitter? So are we.
When Twitter first came out, and even now, we struggled to see how anyone would want to spend their time online reading the minute details about everyone elses lives. When Janine tweets "Just had a shower, now going to have a workout" - I mean, who really cares?
But while receiving constant updates about people's own personal lives didn't really appeal to us, we were intrigued by the small number of businesses that said they were using to promote their business.
Upon investigating this further, we learnt that Twitter is often described as like an online party. People mingle, and talk about all kinds of things, sometimes including business. And we discovered that some businesses use their Twitter account to talk about themselves and promote their business, and they claimed that it worked really well.
And then we discovered something that made Twitter even more interesting to us. A guy we were introduced to by the name of Judah Thomas, who has worked out how to use Twitter really well, has an online course which not only taught us all about Twitter and how to use it, but also showed us how to build a Twitter following of thousands of people very quickly.
Using his methods, we have been able to build a Twitter following of over 2000 people within a month. This is quite exciting because Twitter followers are quite similar to an email list. Anything you post, they'll see. Obviously we don't fill up our Twitter account with ads or promotional posts all the time, but it now gives us an additional marketing arm.
The website statistics for South West eCommerce last month (January 2010) show that Twitter was the third highest referrer of visitors to our website. So having this list, and making the right posts now and then, has already made a big difference to our traffic and visitors.
If you'd like to do the same for your business, and build up a list of followers really quickly, we highly recommend Judah's course, called Tweet Tutor. It's an online course with 16 videos and other resources, that go through step-by-step everything you need to know about Twitter, including how to set up you account, customising it and, most importantly, how to build a list of followers very quickly.

Google Testing "Click To Call" In Australia
Google are trialling something quite interesting in Australia at the moment, for a limited amount of websites that advertise with them.
It's called "Click To Call", and it works like this: someone using their iPhone or other mobile phone device searches for "plumber bunbury" in Google. Like usual, the search results and other advertisements will be listed, but instead of just being able to click and visit your website (like usual), users will have the option to "Click To Call". By clicking on this icon, the is automatically connected to your office number (or other number you specify).
The idea behind the service is that customers who are mobile can click to telephone you instead of visiting your site. The other interesting thing is that this service is free for the customer. That is, there is no call charge to them, Google cover that cost. This is possibly another incentive for people to use the system.
The "Click To Call" link is only available to businesses who advertise in Google using Google Adwords. While it has been in operating overseas (USA) for some time, it is only now being tested and slowly implemented in Australia, so not all accounts have access to it yet. As it becomes available, we will be adding it to the "Professional" package of our Pay Per Click Search Engine Management service, meaning that we can arrange for your ads to display your number and appear on the first page of results for your chosen keywords.
If you're already a Google Adwords customer, Google will email you when your account is able to make use of this new system.
