Where To Build Your Links
As we've mentioned before, a large part of search engine ranking success is all about building backlinks to your site. That is, getting other websites to link to you.
In fact, it's so important, that assuming you've got your keyword selection right (see our last newsletter), and your site is optimised for your main keywords, then link building is pretty much all you need to focus on. And depending on your search engine compeition, you may need to build thousands of links to get up the top of the search results.
It's important to build those links across a wide variety of sources, and to do it slowly (ie. "naturally"), but where on earth do you find them? Here are some suggestions:
- Links From Other Sites - if you know of any other sites that may be interested in linking to you (eg. suppliers, trade directories, friends, related businesses,etc), then do it. These kinds of links are some of the best
- Forums and Blogs - if you ever make a post or comment in someone's blog or forum, and are allowed to include your website link, then make sure you include it! Most forums and blogs will allow you to post website links as part of your "signature"
- Articles - have you written any original articles about your area of expertise? If so, there are hundreds of article directories out there that are looking for articles to list on their website. You are then allowed to include an author's bio, including your website link. When the articles get republished on the article site, and by other publishers, your name and link get included, thereby listing your link on hundreds of websites
- Social Media - Facebook, Twitter, you name it, any kind of social media website, if you have an opportunity to include your website link with any post you make, then do
One final word, however: don't spam! If you simply go out there and place your link all over the place with no relevance, you'll not only get yourself banned from those sites, but possibly even penalised by the search engines if you go overboard. But you should make it an ongoing goal to be posting your weblink anywhere appropriate. This helps to build your backlinks and then your search engine ranking.
