STUDY SHOWS 42% OF PEOPLE CLICK ON NUMBER 1

A recent study by Cornell University in New York showed that 42% of people, after conducting a search on a search engine, clicked on the number 1 listed website.

The study also showed that 8% of people clicked on the second listing, and then this percentage decreased as you go down the list.

There are a number of ways of looking at this. Firstly, the number one position attracted over 5 times as many clicks as the number two position. So, if you've ever thought that being number 2 or 3 is just as good as number 1, think again.

However, another way of looking at it is that although 42% of people clicked on number 1, this naturally means that 58% of people didn't click on number 1, but chose another listing.

What can we make of all of this? It's obvious that being number 1 is best, and will bring in far more traffic than any other position. But equally important is your search result title and description. With 52% of people not clicking on number 1 - what made them do that? Most likely it was because they saw a listing further down that displayed what they were looking for, and it seemed more relevant than the first position.

So, number 1 is great, but you also need to have a compelling description in your search result.

How do you get to number 1? Today, the only way to reach number 1 on most major search engines is through "Pay Per Click".

How do you get a better description for your search results? If you've got a Pay Per Click listing, you can specify what you want it to say. If you're looking at the free results, there are certain things you can do to change your description in most search engines. However, some search engines make their own description out of text from your home page, so you can't control it. If you want your search engine listing description to look better, consider our Site Analysis Service, which will provide you with a report on changes you can make to your home page to improve your search engine performance.

THIS FORTNIGHT'S QUESTION

This fortnight's question comes Mandy:

"I want to send bulk emails to people. Have you got a list?"

We do not provide email lists, only a service to be able to send bulk emails to your own list. Not only is it illegal in Australia to send spam, but it's also very annoying to the recipient and bad business. If you have your own mailing list, we can install a system that will allow you to send bulk emails, automatically handle unsubscriptions etc, for around $500, depending on your requirements.

Got a question? Send it to us at admin@southwestecommerce.com and we'll do our best to answer it, as well as publish one every fortnight for everyone to see.

EXTRA CAPACITY FOR BASIC WEBSITES

We currently have extra capacity for basic websites, so if you are interested in getting one done, now is the time. A basic website means a professional looking site of around 5 pages or less, with basic information and images on it, and no "complex" programs such as online shopping, databases, newsletters, etc.

We can normally do a site like this for around $600, depending on your requirements.
