WHY YOUR SITE IS NOT IN THE SEARCH ENGINES - PART 4

If you missed the first three parts of our article on why you may not be included in the search engines, you can read them at www.southwestecommerce.com/newsletter.htm. Now for the final part 4.

  1. Redirect Pages

Occasionally you may have problems if you are trying to submit a site that has a redirect page on it. Usually the search engine will index the page it is redirecting to, but if for some reason they suspect that you are trying to spam or trick them (eg. by having lots of other domains redirect to the one web site), then they could penalise or ban your site.

  2. Human Reviewed Directories

Remember that some search engine "directories" are edited by humans, not computers. Therefore, if your site does not follow their guidelines, or is offensive, ugly, or so on, you may not be included.

  3. Page Limits

Some search engines have limits on the number of pages from your site that they will include in their database. Some will only include your home page. Some will only include pages that go down one level from your home page, and so on. There's not much you can do about it if a particular search engine has a limitation on pages they will include in their database.

  4. Search Engine Errors

Yes, sometimes even the search engines have bad days. Remember that their databases can run into the millions, and occasionally even billions, of web pages. Maintaining and collating all that information is a huge job, and occasionally they could lose your information or get something wrong. With all their excellent technology, it shouldn't happen. But it can.

  5. Link Farms

You may have seen before how we've told you that the number and quality of web sites linking to yours is really important for search engine ranking purposes. But remember that it's not just numbers, but quality. In particular, if you join any kind of program that tries to artificially raise your link popularity (eg. the "Links To You" program), then you're asking to be penalised. Search engines cottoned on to those practices a long time ago. Stay away from the link farms.

So that ends our article on why you might not be included in the search engines. It was long, so thanks for your patience, but we hope it has given you some pointers on how to remain in the search engines and take advantage of the 1 billion searches conducted on the Internet every day. Are you going to be found?

OVERTURE AUSTRALIA LAUNCH DELAYED

In a previous edition of the SWeCS Newsletter we told you that the major worldwide Pay Per Click search engine, Overture, was opening in Australia on 19 January 2004.

For various reasons this has now been postponed. The latest date being offered is now in February some time.

When the final date is confirmed, we'll let you know about it.

A NEW APPROACH TO WEB DESIGN

The South West eCommerce Strategies new approach to web design means you get cheaper web sites that do their job better.

Why are our web sites better?

  • We're not interested in showing you fancy "bells & whistles" that don't really do much. We're interested in building sites that are simple, clear, work well, and help you sell more.

  • We learn about your business and listen to what you want. Instead of us telling you what kind of web site you should have, we want to understand your business, and then find out what you want the web site to do. It's then our job to provide you with options for you to choose from.

  • We're fast. Don't wait weeks for someone to get started on your site or to make changes to it. We can start the same day you accept our quote.

  • We're cheap. Our rates are the lowest around, without sacrificing quality. You'll get a good looking, professional web site at the lowest price.

  • Our customers confirm we do the job right. Our customer feedback includes: "We would recommend you to anyone", "Very impressed" and "You made it so clear and easy to understand".

Contact us for a quote for your web site. There's no obligation.
