WINDOWS UPDATE CAUSING FLASH WEBSITE PROBLEMS
The reason is complex, something to do with a court case Microsoft is going through at the moment in America.
Whatever the reason, Microsoft had to make changes to the way Internet Explorer displays and runs Flash components in websites. They made this change by incorporating it into their latest udpate of Windows XP. If you've got automatic updates on your computer, you'll no doubt already have the new version. Even if you don't, many of your customers will.
What does it do? When someone has a Flash movie in their website, whether this is in the form of a menu, image, movie, or whatever, users will now be required to click on the Flash element before it allows any interaction.
This mostly affects people using Flash as a menu. Before, your visitor could just click on a menu item and go. Now they need to click once on the Flash element to start it working, and then click again to use the menu button. A small change, but annoying. This change will often also cause borders to appear around your Flash movie when someone hovers their mouse over it (until they click on it to activate it).
The good news is that this can be fixed. Your website coding can be altered, and a hidden file uploaded to your website, that can overcome the problem, ensuring that all your web visitors can use the Flash menu immediately, without having to click on it.
If your website has any Flash in it, talk to your web designer about fixing this problem. Or email us at admin@southwestecommerce.com and we take a look.

THIS FORTNIGHT'S QUESTION
This fortnight's question comes Emily:
"With Pay Per Click advertising, how can I be sure that my competitor or someone else isn't just clicking on my ad and wasting my money? "
The search engines have very sophisticated systems in place to not charge you for these kinds of clicks. One system they have in place is that if the same computer clicks on the same ad more than once in a certain time frame (eg. per day), then the additional clicks are not charged. Even if the additional clicks or not intentional, or suspicious, they will usually not charge for the clicks just to be sure.
We manage dozens of campaigns across the Internet, and see evidence of the search engines not charging for clicks all the time. This isn't necesarily proof that click fraud is happening, but it is proof that the search engines take it very seriously, and when in doubt will err on the side of caution.
At the end of the day, advertisers need to get good conversion rates from their ads, or they'll stop spending. For this reason, it's in the search engines best interests to stay on top of potential click fraud, which they are doing very well.
Got a question? Send it to us at admin@southwestecommerce.com and we'll do our best to answer it, as well as publish one every
fortnight for everyone to see.
