This can even happen for reasons beyond your control, such as when an external web site you link to closes down or moves.

CHANGES AT YAHOO AUSTRALIA

Yahoo Australia has changed it's rules and price for submitting sites to their database.

Yahoo!   Until just recently, Yahoo Australia offered two ways to submit sites to their database. The first was to pay a fee for guaranteed review, and the other was to submit for free. The free method did not guarantee when (or even if) your site would ever get reviewed in a timely manner, but hey it was free!

Times have changed, and Yahoo Australia have now done what many other search engines are doing. All commercial sites wanting to be added to the Yahoo Australia now must pay a fee of $495 (Australian dollars) before being reviewed.

Yahoo Australia go to great lengths to say that this fee does not automatically guarantee inclusion, only review. Some reasons why Yahoo Australia refuse to submit sites include:

- an incomplete site
- not in the English language
- is already in the Yahoo database
- is still under construction
- is illegal, offensive, inflammatory, etc

Yahoo Australia guarantees review within 7 business days, and then if accepted, your site is added to their database.

What if you submitted your site to Yahoo Australia the free way and you still have not been listed? Yahoo don't say what is happening to these sites, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. It would appear that Yahoo Australia has now moved over to the full fee-charging model for all commercial sites and you probably will need to resubmit and pay the fee.

So what do you get for your $495? Yahoo Australia claims to reach 230 million unique users every month, and that 49% of online Australians visit their site every month.

A good idea is to check if you're competitors are in there. If so, you may want to consider a listing too. Although $495 is a lot of money, our guess is that usually you will get a lot more return on that investment than from many other more "traditional" types of advertising.

It's interesting to note that the $495 fee is a one off payment. Many search engines, including the US version of Yahoo, charge a yearly fee. The US version of Yahoo used to charge a single fee, but then changed to an annual fee, but anyone who got in while it was a single fee stayed that way (ie. they don't have to pay an annual fee to stay in the database). Maybe it will work the same for Yahoo Australia if they ever decide to move to annual fees in the future, meaning getting in now could be a good thing.

It should also be noted that Yahoo Australia (www.yahoo.com.au) and the US version of Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) are separate, and inclusion in one does not mean you will be automatically included in the other. Which one you list with depends on your target market.
